API Consumption Moves To The Main Stage At @APIStrat Austin This Month

When planning the API Strategy & Practice Conference, the team works very hard to make the speaker and session line up reflect what we see across the API space. The conference is meant to be an open, non-vendor and non-product focus, discussion about what individuals and companies are facing when it comes to being API providers, as well as API consumers.

When we closed the call for papers for APIStrat this year, it was clear that API consumption would be one of the sessions, but as we progressed in the process of locking down talks it was clear that API consumption should be something that we should move to the main stage. To help highlight the importance of this discussion, I wanted to ask Mark Boyd (@mgboydcom), the conference chair for APIStrat his thoughts on why we did this:

This year has seen two major API consumption challenges: For API providers looking to continue their growth, 2015 has often been about putting their API in front of non-dev users and making their API accessible to a wider audience. We're seeing an increasing use of tools like Google Sheets and slackbot integrations trying to make API functionality available to people who don't code. For businesses and enterprises generally, the increasing use of external APIs has meant more challenges for dev teams in aggregating APIs and using multiple APIs consistently. Each API they are using might come with different terms of service, differing rate limits, different terminology for the same subject matter, and different ways of measuring units. For example, most API consumers I hear from are frustrated that each API they use seems to have a different way of measuring and displaying time formats!

As APIs keep growing in mainstream business use, there becomes a tipping point in scaling the API economy where it starts adding complexity rather than removing it. We think that 2015 is that tipping point and we need to start solving how end users can consume APIs without it creating new challenges for them. We've got some of the best minds who are thinking through how to solve these issues - Mark Geene from Cloud Elements, Paul Katsen from Blockspring, Taylor Barnett from Keen IO, Kirsten Hunter from Akamai, Noam Schwartz from Similar Web, and Todd Sundsted from SumAll have all navigated their way through making their APIs accessible to others or building an abstraction layer so that all the APIs they are consuming are working in unison. This will be a great panel session for API providers who want to make it easier for their developer community to consume their APIs, and great for API consumers to learn some of the tools and tricks that can make it easier to integrate external APIs into their own work.

I think Mark nails it. For me, this session moving to the main stage demonstrates that APIs are going mainstream, as more, and more of the "normals" are tuning into the API conversation. The API consumption panel at APIStrat this month includes:

Mark Geene (@mgeene) of Cloud Elements (@CloudElements)

Paul Katsen (@pavtalk) of Blockspring (@Blockspring)

Taylor Barnett (@taylor_atx) of Keen IO (@Keen_IO)

Kirsten Hunter (@synedra) of Akamai (@Akamai)

Todd Sundsted (@todd_sundsted) of SumAll (@SumAll)

Noam Schwartz (@noamsch) of SimilarWeb (@SimilarWeb)

All of these panel participants are API providers, service providers, as well as consumers -- making for a pretty potent discussion about APIs. These companies are all very aware of the challenges API consumers face, because they are doing it at scale. If you are an API provider looking for the best advice on how to streamline use of your API, these are the people you want to tune into.

As part of the storytelling around @APIStrat, I will be digging deeper into each of these companies, and profiling what they contribute to the API space. APIStrat is a little over two weeks away, so make sure you are registered, before all the tickets are sold--take a look at the schedule, and make sure you are main stage to listen to Mark, Paul, Taylor, Kirsten, Todd, and Noam discuss API consumption in Austin.

A Deep Dive into API Business Models at APIStrat Austin

At APIStrat Austin, we have a whole session track dedicated to exploring API business models. At previous events, we have had main stage panels, individual presentations and fireside chats that outlined the value of defining a business model for an API, but this time we take a deep dive into how startups, growing businesses, and established enterprises are all documenting and defining the business model around their APIs.

API providers are finding that as their customer relationships grow, and their API products evolve beyond an initial lean startup approach of figuring out what works, they now need clearer models that can scale with their overall business.

Clearbit is a good example of how an API provider has had to look at its business model and reorient it towards its market as its API product range grows. Last month, they released their Discovery API, which lets users search for companies by filtering up to fifty specific criteria, including location, size, market category, employee head count, etc. One of the most fascinating filter categories they now offer is the ability to search companies by what technology stack is used. for example, their new API allows users to search all companies that use Stripe, or that run their web applications in Amazon EC2, for example.

“The vast majority of our users use us for lead scoring,” explains Cofounder Alex MacCaw. With thousands of customers on board, Clearbit are growing beyond a startup phase and into a growth hacking stage. Their Discovery API represents a turning point where the leadership team had to go back to their business model and look at how it matched their growth.

“We did have a group plan (with starter, medium and large plans), but we knew ultimately, that that wouldn’t scale.

As we added more APIs, it made sense to charge for the individual API so people are only paying for what they are using. We also wanted to separate out volume and features. We have a lot of add-ons, so now users can get all those extra features, even with very low volume,” MacCaw explains.

So with the introduction of their Discovery API, Clearbit felt the time was right to update their business model with a new pricing strategy. “We wanted to align our pricing structures with customer value,” says MacCaw. In the end, the team came up with a slider model that allows users to set the volume and features they want independently of each other, rather than tying access to features to any particular volume level of usage. “We spent a lot of time figuring out how to do this. Asana gave us this idea: if you link pricing and volume together you will have customers who want lots of volume or lots of features but don’t want both, so they end up feeling like they are paying for stuff they are not using.”

When Clearbit made the change, they also had a unique strategy to bring their current customers with them: a generous grandparent strategy that allowed existing customers to lock in their initial pricing level for a lifetime: this single strategy saw some of the largest revenue uptake in Clearbit’s history and shows the confidence that existing customers have with the product offerings.

Overall, the process Clearbit has had to go through is a common challenge that many API providers must traverse, whether they are startups on a growth trajectory like Clearbit, or established businesses and enterprises opening up their services and data assets via APIs.

“The number one question from companies thinking about opening APIs isn’t a technical question,” says John Musser, a key influencer around API business models who will be moderating the API Strategy and Practice session track on business models. “The key question is around the business model. In our track, we will look at the fundamental questions businesses are asking releasing their APIs and the business models they are developing to support their strategies.”

Some of the speakers in API Strat’s Business Models track include:

Manfred Bortenschlager who will demonstrate how the business model canvas can be applied to the API economy with a series of real world case studies

Tyler Singletary will look at API business models through the eyes of venture capital investors and share some common and future scenarios around future business models and incentive structures for API providers and consumers, and

Victor Osimitz who will outline when an API-Second (rather than API first) business model makes the most sense.

We are also sure business models will be touched on in a range of our keynotes. Teresa Tung, from Accenture, will be talking about her Industrial API Maturity Model and will show how enterprise are now aligning their IoT Strategy and API business models. Dion Hinchcliffe will be talking about a new programmable business model built on a citizen developer culture in which APIs are made accessible to non-technical end users via tools like Google Sheets and Slackbots.

Following lean management principles, early entrants into the API space would often test their API in the real world and start documenting potential business models based on usage, or regularly rehash their pricing strategies to see at what point customers would be willing to onboard. Following the seminal work of thought leaders like John Musser and Teresa Tung, businesses now have a set of tools they can use to assess the strength of their business models in helping them achieve their goals for growth and adoption. We’re looking forward to advancing the thinking in this area at API Strategy and Practice in Austin this November.

The schedule for APIStrat Austin has taken a little longer than expected this round, with the events team having to making some very hard decisions about which talks are accepted, and saying no to some amazing talks and speakers. We have also been working overtime to bring up our diversity numbers, sticking to our mission to make the leading community API event as inclusive as possible.

In addition to the numerous keynotes, panels, and fireside chats (which we will cover in later posts), we've broken out the talks we've received into the following session tracks:

Business Models

Post HTTP

Thank you for your patience while we worked to make the schedule the best we can.
The API podcast Traffic and Weather returns for the third time to APIStrat this November with a new show broadcast live from the event. Hosted by John Sheehan (Runscope) and Steve Marx (Dropbox), Traffic and Weather is a witty and engaging roundup of API breaking news and current practices, with clever insights and clear pointers to must-reads across the API landscape.

Having hosted crowd-pleasing shows at APIStrat in San Francisco and Chicago, Traffic and Weather will bring their third APIstrat show to Austin. Their live podcast from our main stage gets the audience buzzing and generates great talking points and discussion amongst delegates for the rest of our event. We are excited and grateful to welcome John and Steve back again.

“Recording Traffic and Weather live is a lot more fun and interactive than recording alone,” John Sheehan told us. “It’s also nice for us to be around people and see their reactions, because we usually don’t have guests on the show. Recording live with an audience is actually exclusive to API Strategy & Practice — in fact, more than 10% of our shows will have been live at the conference! We’re really excited to keep the tradition going.”

As with their previous gigs, Traffic and Weather in Austin will include audience participation and guest interviews, and will summarize the latest coding dilemmas and business movements in a lighthearted look at the API industry.

A look at past events and shows

At APIStrat Chicago, audience members were invited to complete API-themed limericks, share insights on when an IoT API is not all that necessary (tennis racquets anyone?), and answer groan-inducing puns in a ‘Lightning Fill in the Blanks’ round of quizzes.

Aside from the fun take on all things API, Traffic and Weather does a great job of summarizing some of the latest trends and thought leadership in the API space. Their most recent podcast from April included a look at API tools that help developers build better software, an in-depth look at how Swagger’s move to SmartBear and how the Swagger community can be quantified, as well as HTTP status codes, and authentication. In the hands (or voices?) of John and Steve, some of these seemingly dry topics come alive and encourage you to dig deeper into thinking about your API code and your API business strategy.

Catch up on their previous APIStrat live broadcasts from Chicago:

and from San Francisco:

We can’t wait to see what John and Steve come up with next. Get ready to jump in and volunteer for the quizzes, and remember to bring a raincoat if you are sitting in the front row!

APIStrat: An Inclusive Conversation

Read our round-up of some of the challenges, controversies, and solutions being discussed to address the lack of diversity in tech (and at tech conferences). Here’s what API Strategy and Practice Conference is going to do about it. Join our API conversation on inclusion and diversity…

While API Strategy and Practice has had a Code of Conduct aimed at encouraging fairness and a welcoming environment for all, for our Austin event we are also introducing a Diversity Statement (link when live).

API Strategy and Practice is committed to encouraging innovation and best practice in the ever-strengthening API economy. We see diversity as being a key ingredient of innovation and quality management practices in the API and broader tech sector.

Our diversity statement says in part:

To contribute to a thriving API economy, we need everybody. We believe that APIs can be a technological tool that can transform business, government and community. We believe APIs can create opportunities for everyone and can stimulate new models of business, including for those who have been underrepresented or excluded from participating fully in their communities, in business and in broader society.

To this end, we are working to ensure that at every level of conference organization, we have representation from men and women, and speakers and participants from Black, Latino and disability groups.

We are inspired by the 50/50 pledge and by the work of Women Who Code, Code2040, Black Founders, the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, and the White House initiative to encourage LGBT tech participation.

We are also inspired by the work of API-focused tech companies like Yelp, SumAll, Salesforce, Slack and Stack Overflow.

We recognize that this can be a contentious issue at times. While on the face of it, most may argue that of course we all want equality in participation from diverse communities but often we hear that this is too hard, that quotas end up discriminating against men, or that it is just not possible because history or math.

Since 2013, tech journalist KC has been joking that the arguments against equal representation of women in conference lineups can play out as a bingo of excuses:

insert image 1

But is is because of these shrugged-shouldered dismissals-to-action that we still have a situation in IT where, according to Catalyst, women make up just 5% of CEOs, 21% of boards, and a third of executive management.

insert image 2

Source: Catalyst

Laura Weidman Powers of Code2040 shows similar under-representation amongst Black and Latino groups.

insert image 3

Source: Elaine Marino tweeted about Laura Weidman Powers’ presentation on underrepresentation of minorities in tech.

Other research shows that, on average, women make up just 25% of speakers at tech events. This is despite the fact that evidence shows us that it is 2015. And that investments in tech startups with at least one female founder performed 63% better than all-male teams. Studies into companies across a whole of range of industries consistently show that where the management team and workforce is more diverse, earnings are higher, fraud is lower, customer satisfaction is higher and more staff enjoy their working environment.

Luckily, there is growing recognition that some of our collective biases and excuses against creating more diverse tech conferences and working environments are off the mark and holding us back from leveraging diversity as an enabler for a more just, innovative — and dynamic — future.

Rachel Thomas lists some empirical research that suggests that without a willingness to implement solutions, we can too easily fall into unconscious biases.

In a personal blog, developer and author of Build APIs You Won’t Hate, Phil Sturgeon bravely looks at his own biases and bingo usage. He came to a new conclusion to revisit the idea of quotas and to recommit to making events that he is involved with more inclusive.

Others — including female tech leaders like Lindy Stephens, Australian Managing Director of IT Consultancy ThoughtWorks - have also reversed their position on quotas. She told Business Review Weekly that she had “done a 180 degree about-turn (on the issue of quotas) – because it has worked.”

One of the loudest arguments we hear against the use of quotas to ensure equal representation of women is that some speakers may feel that they have only been invited to the stage because of their gender. Diversity policies for conferences such as API Strategy and Practice are trying to redress the balance of under-representation while still ensuring a high quality of speakers from across the API industry. It is our job to actively search out speakers who better reflect our diverse community. We are trying to rectify a systemic issue here. In the past, tech conferences have given voice to a lot of white men, which has encouraged more white men to present, while women have not necessarily seen it as a space in which they are welcome to participate. As we seek to change this, we have to seek out the best and brightest talent who may not have submitted a call for proposal to speak. It’s not about giving free talks away solely based on gender: it’s about redressing the balance by seeking out leaders in API technologies from all walks of life.

In other words, it is fundamental to our conference organizing that everybody who is speaking on stage deserves to be there on merit. The conference team may have worked harder to contact some speakers, but there is no compromise in quality in our final program.

That’s at the core of why we at API Strategy and Practice have set ourselves an internal goal of trying to reach parity in speakers across the whole program, and wherever possible, within each session track as well. We believe that if we do that this year, it will be easier to encourage more diversity next year, and each year following that until the API economy provides opportunities for everyone to participate and contribute leadership.

We are approaching the API conversation around inclusion and diversity in a way that addresses the problem that 50/50 Pledge Founder Sandi MacPherson described to The Guardian last month. She said: “The issue is not that we’ll end up with people on the stage who shouldn’t be there, it’s literally just that the connection between event organizers and speakers isn’t there.”

While gender inequity is a glaringly obvious problem in the tech industry, our diversity statement also seeks to make sure others who are underrepresented at tech events and in our community are welcomed and encouraged to speak.

PanAmerican World journalist Clarisa Herrera, for example, recently wrote about the glaring lack of Latin Americans in management positions at tech companies, with only about 3-5% in management roles, according to Herrera’s research. She shares that there are a range of new initiatives emerging including accelerators and incubators, the Latino Startup Alliance, leadership summits and others focused on addressing this imbalance.

David Peter shares his insights in Model View Culture into how people who are deaf are prevented from fully participating in tech conferences and even in utilizing online resources, where video podcasts may not be transcribed and where open source library video tutorials are uncaptioned. Peter spent thirteen years working with an audiologist so he could learn how to speak and hear with non-deaf people. The onus is always on the deaf person to communicate better with non-deaf people. He points out that people with disabilities are less likely to be employed and earn less money, and that he has “never met another person who is deaf at a hearing tech conference” and as a result has stopped attending tech meetups.

So here are some of the steps we have already taken to implement the Diversity Statement and build those new connections:

We have equal representation in our Program Committee of men and women and we encourage all of our Program Committee members to help us reach out to new networks and contacts

We are seeking equal representation of men and women as Session Chairs, and we are encouraging these leaders to help us identify new voices in the API developer and business community

We are actively reaching out to women, Black, Latino and LGBT communities, and people with disabilities to invite them to talk and participate

We are working with sponsors to create a subsidy program to help speakers from diverse backgrounds attend.

Now, we are asking for your support and help. You can:

Promote APIStrat to your diverse networks and encourage innovative thinkers of all walks of life to consider attending.

If you have presenting skills, we invite you to help mentor our first-time speakers and others who would like to be in contact with a seasoned presenter who can provide some feedback over email or skype.

If you host a tech meetup, we would love to talk about co-hosting a meetup with you in the leadup to API Strategy and Practice so that our first-time speakers can practice their presentation with an interested and welcoming audience.

If you have the organizational capacity, we invite you to help sponsor our travel subsidy and scholarship program to make sure a more diverse speaker lineup can attend.

If you are presenting at our conference (or at others), please make captions available on your presentation slides to help those with different hearing capacities.

Get informed. Read articles like Sofia Woods’ recent article ”10 Things Men Can Do to Support Women at Conferences”, Jasmine Brett Singer’s article for the HuffPost ”Championing Change from Inside Silicon Valley”, and the various references linked throughout this article.

We recognize that diversity amongst our speakers and audience should be the norm, and shouldn’t need singling out as a particular strategy. But the tech scene — and broader society — just isn’t there yet.

So we hope that the API Strategy and Practice Diversity Statement plays a small role in making sure that everyone knows they are not just welcome but encouraged to participate. That you all have an opportunity to share your insights and be heard for your ideas, and not judged or disregarded because of how you look or act, how much experience you have, or how you live your life. We hope that our Diversity Statement means that whoever you are, you will feel confident that you can approach anyone, introduce yourself, and share in a conversation about how to innovate in, and be a part of, the API economy.

Neha Sampat of Built.io to Keynote APIStrat Austin this November

We are beginning a steady stream of announcements about keynotes for APIStrat Austin 2015 over the next couple weeks, and we are excited about the lineup that we have planned. We have a handful of keynotes to announce this week alone, but one of the leaders in the first group we'd like to highlight is Neha Sampat, the CEO of Built.io.

Neha has 15+ years experience in enterprise software, leading product marketing, cloud computing and online experiences for companies like Sun Microsystems and VMware. She co-founded KurbKarma, a TechCrunch Disrupt 2012 Startup Battlefield Finalist, and is an outspoken supporter of women entrepreneurs, appearing on multiple panels to talk about her role as a female tech leader — exactly the type of leader we look for in the API space.

With Built.io, Neha is leading the charge, taking the industry wisdom she has cultivated through building a mobile Backend-as-a-Service (mBaaS), and working day to day with companies to help them find success at the crossroads between mobile, web and the Internet of Things (IoT). APIs are not just for web and mobile anymore, and Built.io is helping Fortune 500 companies, and governments around the world to provide a new generation of realtime, engaging experiences at this critical intersection.

The forward-thinking conversations that Built.io and Neha Sampat are having with enterprises trying to design one step ahead of business and consumer and community demand, reflect the types of conversations we look to stimulate at APIStrat. We are honored to have her as part of the opening lineup in Austin this November.

Just a quick reminder, we only have a handful of sponsorship slots left, so make sure you contact us now if iyou want to support the conversation in Austin.

API Design, IoT, and Microservices Dominate The Talk Submissions For APIStrat Austin 2015

We closed the call for papers for APIStrat Austin 2015 last week, and have been processing the almost 100 talks that were submitted. We already had some session topics identified for the API conference this November 18th, 19th, and 20th in Austin, TX, but were also delighted to see the vast number of topics submitted through the call for papers process, resulting in this tag cloud.

This edition of APIStrat doesn't have a theme--we are just making about the roots of the conference, and looking to focus the conversation around the most pressing issues we face across the space at the end of 2015--I think this tag cloud reflects that conversation.

We have gone through all the talks, grouped them by topic, and will be reviewing them with the session chairs we have assigned to help organize and manage each track. By October, we will begin publishing the calendar, and sharing more detail about each session track, and the speakers in attendance.

While call for papers is closed, we have a handful of sponsorship opportunities left, so contact us if you want to help support the conversation at APIStrat. At the very least, make sure you are registered before the very intimate event sells out, you won't want to miss the conversations that occur.
